MOT Launches Christmas On Bay Street

Bay Street has gotten a Christmas land makeover this month thanks to the Ministry of Tourism and Bahama Fantasies.

The aim is to make the country’s center come alive with the Bahamian Christmas spirit, while making visitors feel welcomed.

For instance, on Pompey Square, one can see Santa’s slay, decorative gift ornaments hanging in the trees, nutcrackers and the whole area surrounded by lights. There’s also a bit of Junkanoo flare as there are 12ft Junkanoo sculptures to greet people at the main entrances of the square.

At Pirate’s Square, which is across from Christ Church Cathedral, there is replica of the holy manger. There is also a large Christmas tree so that motorists coming from West Bay Street will also see the décor.

At the Straw Market, there are also five Christmas trees that represent the islands that we devastated from Hurricane Joaquin.

At each of the decorated points throughout the day, there will be constant caroling performances done by local musicians.

Director General of Tourism Joy Jibrilu said the ministry wanted to create a Christmas that reflected times past.

“An observation that we made last year was on how quiet Christmas on Bay Street is and we wanted to say that this is a country that is alive and understands the true meaning of it. And so we have created little pockets,” she said.

“Through it all even though we are celebrating and commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, we want to keep in mind our brothers and sisters in the southern islands and to let them know that they are remembered throughout this season.”

Visitors have already given high reaction to the decorations – something tourism officials could not be happier about.

“I think this is the true beauty of what we have done. These squares have come alive. This is for Bahamians and visitors,” Ms. Jibrilu said.

“We hope that this only the beginning of great things to come. I hope that not only it continues but that we build upon it. What it will do is encourage others to join in and help us to not only beautify Nassau and Paradise Island but the Family Islands as well.”
