30TH ANNUAL CONCHMAN TRIATHALON SET FOR NOVEMBER 5TH

On Tuesday, October 25th, 2016, a press conference was held at Taino Beach to announce the 30th Annual Conchman Triathlon.

The triathlon, scheduled for November 5th, 2016, is poised to be the first calendar event for the Ministry of Tourism, Grand Bahama post Hurricane Matthew, honoring its original date of competition.

Christopher Baker- Co Chairman, Grand Bahama Conchman Triathlon

To commemorate the 30th year of the Conchman Triathlon, Chairman of the Grand Bahama Conchman Triathlon, Christopher Baker, said that the committee will make this year a special one, incorporating new elements of competition that will attract a cross section of participants with varied levels of athleticism.

Those competing can participate in the sprint distance, iron kids, team relays, family relays, and the Olympic distance, which will attract a level of high ranking athletes.

The Olympic distance will feature a race that doubles the distance of the usual sprint route.

Persons in the corporate sector will also have an opportunity to participate in a division race specifically designed for company teams.

Each team will require three persons to compete in swimming, biking, and running.

The same format will be used for the newly introduced secondary school unit, where students will compete for a cash prize of $600.00, $300.00 and $100.00, respectively, for the first through third place winners, along with trophies.

Baker added that this year’s competition is poised to attract well over 100 participants as the event has been marketed in Nassau, the Family Islands and abroad, with the assistance of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

Betty Bethel, Director, Ministry of Tourism, Grand Bahama, said that “Hosting the triathlon on the island of Grand Bahama sends a message that Grand Bahama is definitely on the restoration path and we are in shape to hold an event as early as November 5th”.

Sarah St. George G.B. Port Authority

According to Sarah St. George, Vice Chairman of The Grand Bahama Port Authority (Title Sponsor), “Everyone can see that it’s time to begin to go back to work, to earn a living, to bring our tourists here, and really, I think this event is going to be a tribute to them. We want the international community to know that Grand Bahama is back and we’ll be ready for the tourist season, as we can’t afford to sit and dwell; we must get up and go”.

The committee of the Coachman Triathlon anticipates at least thirty (30) international competitors and hopes to attract local competitors from the other islands of The Bahamas.

Christopher Baker, Co-Chairman of the Grand Bahama Conchman Triathlon, hopes that the new initiatives and advertisement will bring a larger pool of participants to visit Grand Bahama Island.
