Regattas in The Bahamas started in 1954 when a group of Bahamians and American yachtsmen saw the need to revitalize the art of sailing and boat building in The Bahamas. Their efforts gave birth to the first regatta being held in Elizabeth Habour April 1954.
These events are held throughout the entire Island in the various districts, and commemorates The Bahamas’ Independence from Great Britain on July 10, 1973. The highlight is the flag-raising ceremony, which constitutes a proud moment for all Bahamians.
The celebration begins with an Ecumenical Service in the evening. Then at midnight, there is a flag-raising ceremony, followed by fireworks and a wide variety of performances by local artists.
