32nd Annual Conchman Triathlon

For the 32nd consecutive year, the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) staged its Annual Conchman Triathlon in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation (MOTA).

As a signature sporting meet on Grand Bahama Island, approximately 200 competitors made their way to Taino Beach where they competed in cycling, swimming and running events.

Christopher Baker, Chairman of GBPA Conchman Triathlon, said, “The event went brilliantly; we’ve had visitors from overseas and they’ve all said without reservation that they will be back again.”

He added that “The schools competition has added so much [to the event] and it’s just been a lot of fun. It’s been a beautiful day, so we’re very pleased.”

As Conchman is a triathlon event which caters to competitors of all kinds, including both Olympic and Sprint trial athletes who may wish to use the event to qualify for other sporting events, as well as children, the competition has a strong appeal to international guests.

In fact, a total of 20 international competitors and their families made sure that Grand Bahama Island’s signature triathlon event was one that could not be missed.

Moreover, visitors who make Grand Bahama Island a destination of choice specifically for the competition are particularly important because they are able to promote the triathlon and the destination via word of mouth.

As a result of advertisement that could not be paid for, double amputee Hector Piccard of South Florida, USA was a part of the international group of competitors as he chose to compete in this particular triathlon for the second time.

Piccard, who became the first double amputee to finish an official Ironman race by completing the 2012 Ironman U.S. Championship in New York City in 16 hours and 42 minutes, is a phenomenal competitor who is a true testament to being able to overcome any obstacle.

Nuvolari Chotoosingh, Manager, Niche Markets, MOTA, GBI, said, “The Ministry of Tourism is extremely pleased to have partnered once again with the Conchman Triathlon Committee headed by Christopher Baker for the 32nd annual event.”

He added that “It is events such as this that will continue to help grow Grand Bahama Island’s reputation as a place for exciting and well-planned events. It is our hope that the Conchman Triathlon will be even bigger next year with more visitors participating as new relationships are being developed with other stakeholders and partners.”
