BERNIE RUSSELL MEMORIAL POOL TOURNAMENT “Honouring a Legend”

- The 6th edition of the Bernie Russell Memorial Pool Tournament kicked off on Friday, September 23rd, 2016 in the ballroom at the Grand Lucayan Resort.

A total of 60 players travelled to the island  of Grand Bahama from New Providence, Long Island, Abaco and The United States to participate in the tournament, which honoured pool hall legend,  the late Bernie Russell.

The competition consisted of both single and double events as, participants competed for the coveted cash prizes.  The overall winner in the Men’s Open Singles was James Lockhart from New Providence, who took home a cash prize of $1,700.

The Eliminators, also from New Providence, claimed the winning title and cash prize of $1,500 for their efforts in the Open Team Doubles. Second place was secured by The Bahama Boys from Grand Bahama while The Internationals out of Abaco rounded out the top three (3) placements.

Remardo Russell, son of the late Bernie Russell and Assistant Organizer of the event, addressed his wish for next year’s event to succeed local expectations, with the support of his generous sponsors.

“ Players should get the opportunity to experience the island when they come down, not just play pool but see what the Bahamas is all about, ” said Russell. 

Jay Philippe, Assistant Manager for Sports Tourism, said that “The Ministry of Tourism saw it to be an opportunity to promote the island of Grand Bahama and persons were very delighted to be a part of this tournament”.

Philippe also spoke to the advancement of the tournament and hopes to continue to accommodate the event in the future, with the support from the Ministry of Tourism.
