Sports Tourism Push In Canada

Bahamas Sports Tourism Bids to Capture Canadian Market. Sports tourism for The Bahamas got a boost in Canada recently as a contingent of sports, academic and tourism representatives took part in a series of meetings and events promoting The Bahamas as a sports destination.

Tyrone Sawyer, director of Sports Tourism in Ministry of Tourism; Sean Bastian of The College of The Bahamas’ Athletics Department and Mario Bowleg of the Bahamas Basketball Federation discussed The Bahamas’ enhanced and accredited sports facilities with Canadian sports associations. The country’s modern venues are available to Canadian teams and teams from other countries for training and competition across a broad range of sporting disciplines. The group also advised Canadians the other advantages that apply to bringing their teams and events to The Bahamas.

Executives at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations – a quasi-government agency responsible for all elementary, high school and university sports – learned about tournaments and training opportunities for Canadian teams. Special emphasis was placed on the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s ‘Summer of Thunder’ program, which featured competition between Bahamian teams and nine USA-based college teams this past summer.

Mr. Sawyer stated that the trip is a first of many planned by his department to initiate conversation and attract sport groups and individuals to The Bahamas for training and competition. “The Bahamas recognizes the growth potential in Sports Tourism and has made considerable advancements with new and upgraded stadiums, swimming facilities, sports fields and services to host the world…and now we’re being proactive about the business of attracting sports tourism to ensure the success of this growing and lucrative sector.”

The highlight of the promotional trip was a Bahamas Sports Tourism seminar and luncheon organized by the Bahamas Tourist Office (BTO) Canada. Representatives of several Canadian sports associations were hosted at the seminar and participants learned of the unique tourism features of The Bahamas, special programs, facilities and attractions that aid sports travel to the destination.
