Festival honors Exuma son
Rev. Dr. Charles Saunders receives special recognition in Exuma
The 7th Annual Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival will honor education pioneer and prominent Baptist leader Rev. Dr Charles W. Saunders this March in George Town, Exuma.
Rev. Saunders said that he is delighted be honored in his hometown and by his very own people, who he diligently served over the years.
“It is a very humbling experience for me. Over the years, I have been able to serve my people in Exuma as best as I could and I’m happy that they are reciprocating,” he said.
Having contributed to education in a vast variety of capacities including serving as Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, founder of the Charles W. Saunders Baptist School, and advisor to the government on Education, Rev. Saunders encouraged today’s youth to embrace education as a ticket out of poverty and a means of bettering themselves.
“I would tell the youths of the nation to devote their time to their education and let others see that they can be somebody, said the 80-year-old Oxford University graduate. “Don’t focus on the glamorous life. Just be the best you can be where you are, and who you are.”
The Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival has earned a reputation for paying tribute to individuals who have helped to strengthen Exuma, socially and financially. Organizers of this year’s festival promised to continue the tradition. They also promised an exciting lineup of musical performances, food and culinary and cultural competitions.
Once again, the festival will feature a culinary competition hosted by the Village at Hooper’s Bay on Saturday March 19th. Cultural competitions such as the the conch cracking, onion peeling, coconut barking and conch fritter eating contests will also return.
The Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival will be held at the Regatta Park, George Town from March 17 to 19.
