FCCA Competition
Abaco, a world class destination has demonstrated over time that it has world class young people. Two of them, are being hailed as custodians of our rich tourism product, because of their successful participation in the 2010 FCCA’s Foundation Children’s Poster Competition. In total, The Bahamas ( Eleuthera, New Providence & Abaco) have won $6,500 in cash prizes and hundreds of dollars in school art supplies, over the years by advancing to the finals or winning either 1st, 2nd or 3rd place positions.

In previous years, students from Abaco have done very well in this particular competition and have been rewarded with cash prizes for making it to the final round. However, never has a student from Abaco been able to place in the top three of this competition. In 2004, C. V. Bethel’s Donovan McKenzie placed third and in 2005, C.C. Sweeting’s Julius Tinker won. Now, securing the second place title in the 2010 senior division and winning a cash scholarship in the amount of $1500.00 was first time entrant Sebastian Andrews, who is an 11th grade student at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School. Due to Mr. Andrews’ success, St. Francis de Sales Catholic School was also presented with a monetary award in the amount of $1500.00. In addition to this, Yelena Persaud a 6th grade student at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School was presented with a cheque in the amount of $200.00 for reaching the final round in the junior division.
Sebastian Andrews and Yelena Persaud were the only two students from Abaco to enter the FCCA Poster Competition this year. Despite having only two students to enter, Abaco received its best performance by securing a second place win for the Bahamas. Carla Stuart, Cruise Director said that over the years, it has been a pleasure for the Cruise Unit to spearhead efforts in collaboration with FCCA to expose students to the tourism product. The Minister of Tourism, Senator the Honourable Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace has been amazed at the Bahamian talent that the FCCA’s Competition has caused to surface in the regional arena, but more importantly the awareness generated to the point, where the students are truly ambassadors for the environment, through their creativity. He congratulates St. Francis de Sales, Yelena Persand and Sebastian Andrews. He also expressed his gratitude to the Florida Caribbean Association for affording Bahamians the opportunity to participate with the 13 other countries this year.
